She is also coordinator of the joint major in Psychology and Linguistics and is the director of the graduate programme in Cognition and Development at Emory. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, and the role of comparison in conceptual development. Woolf received her BSc in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her PhD in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983.

She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialisation is behavioural neuroscience, and her research spans the organisation of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease and consciousness. Virginia Slaughter received her BA in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (New York) in 1985 and her PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994.
